Throw distance is the distance from the projector’s lens to the screen \u2014 and it is the one number that decides whether a projector works in your room at all. Put the projector too close and the image won’t fill the screen; too far and it overflows. This guide explains the simple math behind it, with a popular home projector as the worked example.<\/p>\n

The throw ratio: the only spec that matters here<\/h2>\n

Every projector lens has a throw ratio<\/strong>, written like 1.02\u20131.23. It links image width to distance:<\/p>\n

Throw distance = image width \u00d7 throw ratio<\/strong><\/p>\n

Note it is the image width<\/em>, not the diagonal you buy the screen by. For a 16:9 screen, width = diagonal \u00d7 0.872 (a 120\u2033 screen throws a picture 104.6\u2033 wide \u2014 see our screen size guide<\/a> for the full chart).<\/p>\n

Why two numbers? Most home projectors have a zoom lens. The first number is the closest the projector can sit (widest zoom), the second is the farthest (most telephoto). Anywhere inside that range, you can fine-tune the image size with the zoom ring instead of moving the mount.<\/p>\n

Worked example: Epson Home Cinema 1080<\/h2>\n

The Home Cinema 1080 is one of Epson’s most popular home models, with a throw ratio of 1.02\u20131.23<\/strong>. Running the formula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

So in a typical living room with the projector ceiling-mounted or on a shelf 10 feet from the wall, this projector pairs naturally with a 120\u2033 screen. Want the 150\u2033 instead? You would need to get the lens 11.1 to 13.4 feet back \u2014 possible in a long room, impossible in many condos.<\/p>\n

Projectors vary enormously. A longer-throw model like Epson’s Home Cinema 3800 (1.32\u20132.15) needs 11.5 \u2013 18.7 ft<\/strong> for that same 120\u2033 picture, while short-throw models do it from a few feet \u2014 we cover those in our short-throw guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How to measure your room<\/h2>\n

  1. Measure from the screen wall to where the lens will be<\/strong> \u2014 the front of the projector, not the back of the cabinet or the middle of the ceiling mount. On a ceiling mount, allow a few inches behind the lens position for the projector body and cables.<\/li>\n
  2. Check the range, not a single number.<\/strong> Your mounting point has to fall inside the projector’s distance range for your screen size, ideally not at either extreme \u2014 mid-zoom usually gives you the most adjustment room during setup.<\/li>\n
  3. Then pick the screen.<\/strong> If your distance is fixed by the room, work backwards: distance \u00f7 throw ratio = the image width you can fill, and from width to the matching screen size.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
