But most projectors don&#8217;t live in fully dark rooms \u2014 they live in living rooms, basements with small windows, and dens where a lamp stays on. That is exactly where a grey screen earns its place. Here is the physics, kept simple, and a straight answer for each kind of room.<\/p>\n<h2>1. What the screen colour actually does<\/h2>\n<p>A screen has no light of its own; it can only reflect what the projector sends and absorb the rest. A matte white surface reflects nearly all of that light evenly in every direction, which is why white is the reference: colours and brightness come back faithful to what the projector produced.<\/p>\n<p>A grey surface starts from a grey base, so it absorbs a fixed share of <em>everything<\/em> that hits it \u2014 projector light and room light alike. Two consequences follow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blacks get deeper.<\/strong> The darkest parts of the image are just screen reflecting whatever light is in the room. A surface that absorbs more of that stray light shows a darker, more convincing black, and contrast \u2014 the gap between black and white \u2014 feels stronger.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ambient light does less damage.<\/strong> Ceiling lights, windows and pale walls constantly wash a faint grey veil over the picture. On a grey screen that veil is dimmer, so the image keeps more of its punch with the lights partly on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some grey screens go further with an engineered surface that reflects the projector&#8217;s light back toward the viewers while steering light arriving from above and the sides \u2014 ceiling lights, windows \u2014 away from the seats. That is the idea behind ambient light rejecting (ALR) designs, and it is the direction of our AG-series grey screens.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Where white still wins \u2014 honestly<\/h2>\n<p>In a dedicated theatre room with full light control \u2014 blackout curtains, no lamp competing with the screen \u2014 ambient light is already near zero, so grey&#8217;s absorption buys almost nothing. What it still costs is brightness: a grey screen returns less of the projector&#8217;s light, so whites and bright colours are slightly dimmer than on white. In that dark room, matte white gives you the brightest, most colour-faithful image, and that is the combination we recommend there. White also stays the safer pick with an older or lower-brightness projector at a large size: when lumens are scarce, you don&#8217;t want the screen absorbing any of them.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Buy white. Lights you can&#8217;t or won&#8217;t fully kill? Buy grey \u2014 it trades a little brightness for visibly deeper blacks and a picture that survives the room.
